How to Use Dietary Supplements Correctly

Proper Use of Herbal Dietary Supplements

Choosing to support your health with herbal products is not only a return to nature – it is also a step toward personal responsibility. Many people today consciously turn to natural remedies because they feel that conventional medicine often reaches its limits when it comes to chronic health concerns.

We do not wish to speak against conventional medicine – it remains essential and life-saving in many situations. However, particularly with long-term, complex, or diffuse conditions, medicinal plants and traditional herbal formulations may offer valuable, gentle, and profound complementary support. Many of our customers report positive experiences with herbs described, among others, in the works of Stephen Harrod Buhner.

What You Should Know About Proper Use

1. Can herbal products have side effects?

Yes – plants can also cause side effects. “Natural” does not automatically mean “free of side effects.” Individual reactions vary depending on dosage, combination with other substances, metabolism, and existing health conditions.

Most side effects occur when products are overdosed or when too many different supplements are taken simultaneously. In most cases, symptoms resolve quickly after reducing or discontinuing the product.

2. How do I safely begin using a new product?

Our recommendation: Start slowly!

Begin with approximately one-quarter of the recommended daily dose and gradually increase it over 1–2 weeks depending on tolerance. This allows your body to adjust to the new supplement more gently. If well tolerated, you can slowly work toward the full recommended dose.

If unpleasant reactions occur, maintain the current dose for several days or reduce it further. If your body clearly signals poor tolerance, it is best to discontinue use. Not every person tolerates every plant equally.

3. Is it acceptable to exceed the recommended daily dose?

The daily dose stated on the label is intended as a guideline – not an absolute rule.

Some individuals experience noticeable effects from very small amounts, while others may require higher doses to notice meaningful support. In certain cases, particularly with chronic issues, higher dosages may be used under informed guidance.

We have seen examples where some customers experienced significant benefits with substantially increased doses, while others experienced intolerance even at half the standard amount. Always listen carefully to your body.

4. How long should I use an herbal supplement?

This depends greatly on the specific plant involved. Some herbs, such as licorice root, are generally recommended only for shorter periods. Others, such as Baikal skullcap, may be suitable for much longer-term use.

As a general principle, we recommend: Take regular breaks. This may help preserve effectiveness while allowing the body periods of rest and regeneration.

5. Should I involve a doctor or naturopath?

If possible: Yes.

We recommend seeking guidance from a healthcare practitioner or therapist who is experienced in herbal or integrative approaches. While this may sometimes require extra effort, having knowledgeable professional support can be extremely valuable.
