Oregano Tincture (1 : 4) Oregano (Origanum vulgare) tincture made from dried herb What is Oregano (Origanum vulgare)? We often associate oregano (also called Wild Marjoram) only with a delicious spice that gives pizza and pasta their special flavor. Yet oregano is far more than just a culinary herb. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Origanum vulgare has been valued as a versatile medicinal plant for centuries. This aromatic plant with its delicate purple flowers is native to the Mediterranean region, where it finds the warm climate and calcareous soils it thrives in. True oregano is most often found on sunny slopes, in hedgerows, and along roadsides, but it also adapts well to dry meadows and grasslands. When conditions are favorable, oregano can grow up to 70 cm tall. For our tincture, we use exclusively oregano herb according to traditional applications. The herb is carefully harvested, gently dried, and extracted with alcohol. This ensures that all valuable compounds are released and preserved in their purest form. Favored by the Ancient Greeks and in TCM The ancient Greeks already appreciated the warming qualities of oregano. Dioscorides devoted an entire chapter of his famous work to the herb, and Hippocrates prescribed it to his patients, recommending oregano for hemorrhoids and as a birthing aid. Even more applications are known from Traditional Chinese Medicine, where oregano has held a central role for centuries. Classified as warming, it is associated with the functional systems of the stomach, spleen, heart, lungs, and intestines. In TCM, oregano is regarded as an important remedy for Qi stagnation, which can lead to disruptions in these systems. Furthermore, oregano is used in TCM for chronic cough, colds, fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, dizziness, and joint pain. Origanum vulgare contains valuable compounds such as: essential oils (including borneol, thymol, carvacrol, p-cymene), bitter compounds, tannins, and vitamin C.
