What is Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)?

Ashwagandha is a nightshade plant and has long been described in Ayurvedic plant tradition. Its role is often compared with ginseng in TCM, which is why Ashwagandha is also known as “Indian ginseng”. The origin of the nightshade plant is thought to be in Africa. However, Indian ginseng is also native to Pakistan, China, the Mediterranean region and India. The herbaceous shrub can reach a height of up to 2 metres and, with its oval leaves and cherry-like flowers, looks very similar to the well-known physalis. The hard red berries are not intended for consumption.

For food supplements, mainly the root is processed. This product uses ground ashwagandha root; it is not a root extract.

When producing our ashwagandha tablets, we follow traditional plant knowledge. We use ashwagandha roots from selected cultivation. They are carefully cut into small pieces, gently dried and finely ground. Only after all processing steps have passed our quality control is the raw material gently pressed into tablets.

Ashwagandha in the Ayurvedic tradition

Ashwagandha has been described in Ayurveda for more than 3000 years and still holds an important place there today. Indian ginseng is traditionally classified in Ayurvedic plant knowledge and is known to many people as part of a mindful plant routine.

This classification describes the traditional use of the plant and is not a statement about the prevention, treatment or cure of diseases.

Beyond Ayurvedic teaching, Ashwagandha is known by several names, including Withania somnifera, Indian ginseng and winter cherry. These names are used for botanical identification and do not imply any specific effect.

Withania somnifera contains typical plant constituents, such as alkaloids including anaferine, anahygrine, cuscohygrine, nicotine, tropine and withasomnine. Withanolides include somniferanolide, somniwithanolide, withaferin A and withasomniferanolide.

Typical constituents of Ashwagandha

The ashwagandha root used here naturally contains typical plant constituents, including steroidal alkaloids and lactones, in particular:

Whitanin, Whitaninin, Pseudowhitanin, Somnin, Somniferin, Somniferinin, Tropin, Pseudotropin, so-called Ashwagandhanolides, Cuscwohygrin, Anferin, Anhydrin, Sitoindoside 7⁄8 and various others.

Triphala Tablets, 480 mg Fruit Powder Tablet size: 16 mm × 8 mmFruit powder per tablet: 480 mg The Traditional Three-Fruit Blend from Ayurveda What is Triphala? Triphala is a well-known traditional Ayurvedic formula. This food supplement combines the myrobalan fruits Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki in equal proportions. Amalaki is also known as Indian gooseberry. The fruit grows on the Amla tree in tropical and subtropical regions of India. Botanically, the tree belongs to the spurge family. The yellow, rounded fruit resembles a combination of a gooseberry and a grape and has pale longitudinal stripes. Haritaki is also native to tropical regions. The evergreen tree can reach a height of up to 20 metres and produces oval, brownish fruits. Haritaki is botanically known as Terminalia chebula and, like Bibhitaki, belongs to the myrobalans. Bibhitaki also grows in India. Its nut-like, brownish fruits come from a deciduous tree that can grow up to 30 metres high and belongs to the winged-seed family. Our tablets are produced in line with the traditional Triphala formula. We use fruits from organic cultivation. Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki are selected in equal proportions, carefully dried, finely ground and formed into tablets. The tablets provide a practical dosage form for a daily nutrition routine and contain the three fruit powders in equal proportions. Triphala in the Ayurvedic Tradition Triphala is highly regarded in the Ayurvedic tradition. Its name comes from Sanskrit and is composed of tri, meaning “three”, and phala, meaning “fruits”. The formula combines three plant ingredients that are assigned to different doshas within Ayurvedic teaching. This classification is used solely to describe the traditional Ayurvedic understanding. In Ayurveda, Amalaki is assigned to Pitta, the dosha of fire. The fruit is also known as Amla or Indian gooseberry and forms one of the three equally proportioned ingredients in the Triphala blend. Haritaki is assigned to the Vata dosha in Ayurvedic teaching. For Triphala, the dried fruit material is finely ground and processed together with Amalaki and Bibhitaki. Bibhitaki is assigned to the Kapha dosha in Ayurveda, traditionally associated with earth and water. In the Triphala formula, the fruit powder complements the other two ingredients to create a three-fruit blend. Amalaki Fruit: Amalaki is the fruit of the Indian Amla tree and is botanically known as Emblica officinalis. The tree grows in tropical and subtropical regions. Its rounded yellow fruit has pale longitudinal stripes. In English, Amalaki is widely known as Indian gooseberry. In the Ayurvedic understanding, Amalaki symbolises Pitta, the dosha of fire. This classification forms part of traditional Ayurvedic teaching. In this product, the dried fruit is used as a finely ground fruit powder. Haritaki Fruit: Haritaki, botanically known as Terminalia chebula, is the fruit of an evergreen tree and belongs to the myrobalan group. The tree is found in tropical regions and can reach a height of up to 20 metres. During the first half of the year the tree carries green leaves; later, pale flowers appear and gradually develop into oval, brownish fruits. For the Triphala blend, the dried Haritaki fruit is finely ground. Haritaki is assigned to the Vata dosha in the Ayurvedic understanding. This traditional classification is used to describe its place within Ayurvedic teaching. Bibhitaki Fruit: The third fruit in the Triphala blend is Bibhitaki, botanically known as Terminalia belerica. It comes from a myrobalan, a deciduous tree that can grow up to 30 metres high. The tree belongs to the winged-seed family and originates in India. It is known for both its oil-rich seeds and its fruits, which are initially greenish and later brownish. In Ayurveda, Bibhitaki is assigned to the Kapha dosha, traditionally associated with the elements earth and water. For this product, the dried fruit is used as part of the three-fruit blend. Tablet Composition: The formula is based on the three finely ground fruit powders Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki. The excipients listed below are additionally used to provide tablet stability. Ingredients IngredientAmount per daily servingInformation Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) approx. 320 mg Organic raw material Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) approx. 320 mg Organic raw material Bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica) approx. 320 mg Organic raw material The tablets also contain two cellulose-based excipients, abbreviated as MCC and HPMC, for tablet stability, as well as a small amount of magnesium stearate representing a weight proportion of a few parts per thousand. Turmeric and Black Pepper, 660 mg plant material Tablet size 16mm * 8mm Plant material per tablet 660mg What is turmeric (Curcuma longa) with black pepper (Piper nigrum)? Most people know turmeric and black pepper primarily as spices. In this formula, both plant materials are combined in a practical tablet form. Turmeric and black pepper have a long tradition in Ayurveda and TCM. However, this product is intended as a neutral supplement to the daily diet. Turmeric belongs to the ginger family and originally comes from tropical regions of Asia. The plant is cultivated in Asia and Africa, among other regions. Curcuma longa is an approximately 1 metre tall plant that grows from a tuber. With its large stalked leaves and yellow flowers, it resembles the ginger plant. Piper nigrum belongs to the pepper family. The climbing plant grows up trees and can reach a height of up to 10 metres. Black pepper is made from the unripe fruits, which develop their wrinkled shape and black colour during drying. For the production of our tablets, we use carefully selected turmeric roots. After the above-ground parts of the plant have wilted, the roots are cut into small pieces, dried and finely ground. Once the raw materials have passed the intended inspection and processing steps, they are processed into pressed tablets.
