What is Maca (Lepidium meyenii)?
In recent years, Maca has also become a familiar term in many European markets. It is the root of a cress-family plant originally native to Peru and mainly cultivated in high-altitude regions of the Andes. There, the plant is adapted to wind, cold and intense sunlight. With a growth height of around 20 cm, it grows close to the ground. The plant part used is the tuber-like root, which develops from the plant stem and visually resembles a small turnip. Depending on the raw material, the size and colour of the roots may naturally vary.
The tuber produces feather-like leaves, which are traditionally also used as a food in Peru, for example in salads.
Traditionally used plant from the Andes
Maca has long been part of Peruvian food culture. The plant has been cultivated in the Andes for around 2,000 years and is traditionally used as a food. Names such as “Maca root”, “Andean root” or “Peruvian ginseng” are also commonly associated with Lepidium meyenii. In our tablets, the ground Maca root tuber is provided in a practical dosage form.
