What is Milk Thistle Tincture (Silybum marianum)?

Milk thistle is a thistle species well known in European herbal and botanical tradition. Silybum marianum has been mentioned in historical plant descriptions since the Middle Ages, and possibly even earlier. The name “milk thistle” itself reflects the special role this plant has played in traditional stories. According to one legend, an ordinary thistle came into contact with breast milk while Mary was nursing the infant Jesus. The plant is said to have received the distinctive colouring of its leaves as a result. While thistle leaves are usually green, milk thistle stands out with its white-green leaves. Its purple flowers on stems up to 150 cm tall also make it easy to recognise - together with the spiny leaves typical of thistles. Silybum marianum originally comes from the Mediterranean region. Today, this member of the daisy family can also be found in warm and dry locations in Central Europe.

For our tincture, we use equal parts milk thistle fruits and herb. The plant parts are selected according to defined quality criteria, carefully dried and extracted with alcohol. This creates a 1:4 extract that provides the plant-typical constituents of milk thistle in liquid form. The tincture is a practical dosage form for anyone who wants to include Silybum marianum as a food supplement in their daily routine.

Traditional botanical knowledge since antiquity

Historical records show that milk thistle has been described in botanical literature for a long time. Names such as Dioscorides, Pliny and Hildegard of Bingen are often mentioned in connection with the plant. These references are part of European herbal history and help explain why milk thistle still appears in many herbals and botanical descriptions today. For current use as a food supplement, however, the factual composition of the product is the focus.

Milk thistle contains plant-typical constituents such as the flavonoid complex silymarin, consisting of silibinin, silychristin and silydianin. Literature also describes betaine, bitter substances, gamma-linolenic acid, essential oils and resins as natural constituents of the plant.
