Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) Tincture

Product information "Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) Tincture"

Motherwort Tincture (1:4)

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) tincture made from the dried herb

What is Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)?

Motherwort enchants not only with its melodious name but also with its striking appearance. Along the square, hairy stem grow heart-shaped leaves with a fine fuzz on the underside. Countless purple fluffy blossoms are a sight to behold. Native from Europe to Iran, this medicinal plant prefers nitrogen-rich soils near walls and fences.

When these growing conditions are met, Leonurus cardiaca can reach a height of up to 120 centimeters.

We use only the herb for our products, as it contains the highest concentration of active compounds. As always at Phönix der Lebenskraft, we source our raw materials exclusively from ecologically valuable cultivation and place the utmost importance on quality and purity.

Recommended by Skilled Physicians in the Middle Ages

When thinking of the Middle Ages, we often associate it with dirt, disease, and hunger. However, we should remember that we are descendants of that time – without the ingenuity and connection to nature of the people in the 15th/16th centuries, we would not be here today.

Herbal medicine played a significant role back then, and motherwort was considered one of the most important healing herbs. It was first mentioned in a medical book ("Gart der Gesundheit") in 1485. Renowned physicians such as Paracelsus and Rembert Dodoens prescribed motherwort for various ailments. Paracelsus used it to treat palpitations and cramps in the limbs, while Dodoens recommended it for melancholy and to strengthen the heart. The general population also used it for anxiety and insomnia.

Today we know that motherwort contains a variety of valuable active ingredients, such as:

  • Flavonoids
  • Bitter compounds
  • Betaine
  • Ursolic acid
  • Leonurine
  • Choline
  • Essential oils

These components make it a true all-rounder, especially when it comes to protecting our mitochondria. These cellular powerhouses are found in every cell and supply our organs, muscles, and joints with energy. To fulfill their task, mitochondria need special protection — a task that motherwort fulfills by acting as a true bodyguard for our energy centers.
