What is St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum)?
St. John's wort is native to Europe and western parts of Asia. The perennial plant can grow up to 90 cm high and is commonly found along paths, embankments and in light woodland. On closer inspection, the leaves appear slightly perforated. These are the so-called secretory cavities that contain essential oils and resins.
A special feature of the plant is its many yellow flowers, which turn blood-red when rubbed.
St. John's wort has been held in particular regard since the Middle Ages. At that time, many people associated it with the sun. This cultural connection still shapes many traditional names for the plant today.
For our products, we use ground herb from the St. John's wort plant. We focus on careful selection and consistent product quality.
The power of the sun
In the Middle Ages, Hypericum was often described because of its appearance and its role in herbal tradition. Konrad von Megenburg, who wrote about the treasures of nature, dedicated a chapter to St. John's wort in one of his books. Historical descriptions of this kind are primarily of cultural-historical interest today.
Paracelsus and Pastor Künzle also mentioned St. John's wort in their writings. For today's product description, the focus is on the plant profile, composition and recommended intake - without historical use or effect claims.
What's inside:
St. John's wort contains various plant constituents, including anthracene derivatives, flavonol glycosides, proanthocyanidins, tannins and essential oils.
