St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) - Tincture

Product information "St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) - Tincture"

St. John’s Wort Tincture (1:4)

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) tincture made from the aerial parts

What is St. John’s Wort?

St. John’s Wort is native to Europe and the western parts of Asia. The shrub, which can grow up to 90 cm tall, prefers to grow along roadsides, embankments, and in light forests. When examined closely, the leaves appear slightly perforated — these are the so-called secretory glands where essential oils and resins are stored.

The true highlight of the plant, however, is its countless yellow flowers, which turn a deep red when rubbed.

St. John’s Wort has enjoyed a special reputation since the Middle Ages. Back then, people regarded it as the embodiment of the sun. To them, St. John’s Wort stored the sun’s energy and was capable of dispelling darkness. Perhaps that is why the plant is still often referred to as “witch’s herb” in folklore.

The Power of the Sun

In the Middle Ages, Hypericum was revered not only for its appearance but especially for its healing properties. Konrad von Megenburg, who studied the treasures of nature, dedicated a whole chapter to St. John’s Wort in one of his books. He listed its main uses at the time: “St. John’s Wort strengthens the heart and liver, cleanses the kidneys, heals ulcers, and draws out poisons (from the body).” In folk medicine, the herb was also used to support the respiratory organs and the gallbladder. The famous physician Paracelsus was likewise an admirer of St. John’s Wort.

He attributed four different virtues or healing powers to the herb:

  1. Phantasmata – used against states of mind associated with “wild spirits and fantasies.”
  2. Worm virtue – in folk medicine, St. John’s Wort was believed to be particularly effective against worms.
  3. Wound virtue – St. John’s Wort was traditionally used for wounds. Paracelsus even wrote: “There is no herb in all the lands that can compare to it in healing wounds, bruises, dislocations, and chronic damage.”
  4. Balsamic virtue – Pastor Künzle praised its diverse uses, highlighting especially its soothing effect on pain. He recommended: “Taken internally, it heals colic, quickly heals all stab and cut wounds, and should be present in every household.”
