The Traditional Three-Fruit Blend from Ayurveda
What is Triphala?
Triphala is a well-known traditional Ayurvedic formula. This food supplement combines the myrobalan fruits Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki in equal proportions. Amalaki is also known as Indian gooseberry. The fruit grows on the Amla tree in tropical and subtropical regions of India. Botanically, the tree belongs to the spurge family. The yellow, rounded fruit resembles a combination of a gooseberry and a grape and has pale longitudinal stripes.
Haritaki is also native to tropical regions. The evergreen tree can reach a height of up to 20 metres and produces oval, brownish fruits. Haritaki is botanically known as Terminalia chebula and, like Bibhitaki, belongs to the myrobalans.
Bibhitaki also grows in India. Its nut-like, brownish fruits come from a deciduous tree that can grow up to 30 metres high and belongs to the winged-seed family.
Our tablets are produced in line with the traditional Triphala formula. We use fruits from organic cultivation. Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki are selected in equal proportions, carefully dried, finely ground and formed into tablets.
The tablets provide a practical dosage form for a daily nutrition routine and contain the three fruit powders in equal proportions.
Triphala in the Ayurvedic Tradition
Triphala is highly regarded in the Ayurvedic tradition. Its name comes from Sanskrit and is composed of tri, meaning “three”, and phala, meaning “fruits”. The formula combines three plant ingredients that are assigned to different doshas within Ayurvedic teaching. This classification is used solely to describe the traditional Ayurvedic understanding.
In Ayurveda, Amalaki is assigned to Pitta, the dosha of fire. The fruit is also known as Amla or Indian gooseberry and forms one of the three equally proportioned ingredients in the Triphala blend.
Haritaki is assigned to the Vata dosha in Ayurvedic teaching. For Triphala, the dried fruit material is finely ground and processed together with Amalaki and Bibhitaki.
Bibhitaki is assigned to the Kapha dosha in Ayurveda, traditionally associated with earth and water. In the Triphala formula, the fruit powder complements the other two ingredients to create a three-fruit blend.
Amalaki Fruit:
Amalaki is the fruit of the Indian Amla tree and is botanically known as Emblica officinalis. The tree grows in tropical and subtropical regions. Its rounded yellow fruit has pale longitudinal stripes. In English, Amalaki is widely known as Indian gooseberry.
In the Ayurvedic understanding, Amalaki symbolises Pitta, the dosha of fire. This classification forms part of traditional Ayurvedic teaching. In this product, the dried fruit is used as a finely ground fruit powder.
Haritaki Fruit:
Haritaki, botanically known as Terminalia chebula, is the fruit of an evergreen tree and belongs to the myrobalan group. The tree is found in tropical regions and can reach a height of up to 20 metres.
During the first half of the year the tree carries green leaves; later, pale flowers appear and gradually develop into oval, brownish fruits. For the Triphala blend, the dried Haritaki fruit is finely ground.
Haritaki is assigned to the Vata dosha in the Ayurvedic understanding. This traditional classification is used to describe its place within Ayurvedic teaching.
Bibhitaki Fruit:
The third fruit in the Triphala blend is Bibhitaki, botanically known as Terminalia belerica. It comes from a myrobalan, a deciduous tree that can grow up to 30 metres high. The tree belongs to the winged-seed family and originates in India. It is known for both its oil-rich seeds and its fruits, which are initially greenish and later brownish.
In Ayurveda, Bibhitaki is assigned to the Kapha dosha, traditionally associated with the elements earth and water. For this product, the dried fruit is used as part of the three-fruit blend.
