What is Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)?

Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of smelling valerian root will not forget it easily. Its intoxicating scent has a magical attraction for cats, which is why the plant is also known as "cat’s herb." Aside from the unique scent of the roots, the plant with its reddish-white flowers appears rather unremarkable at first glance. This perennial, which can grow up to 1.5 meters tall, is mainly native to Europe and Asia. It prefers to grow in forests, moist meadows, and along riverbanks.

For our products, we exclusively use roots from ecologically valuable organic cultivation. Don’t worry – our tablets are pleasant to use.

A Remedy with a Long Tradition

Valerian already enjoyed great renown in antiquity and was revered as a universal remedy. In the Middle Ages, the roots were considered the most effective treatment for pain, respiratory ailments, and eye conditions. The famous herbalist Sebastian Kneipp also trusted the effectiveness of this healing plant and dedicated an entry to it in his 1894 plant atlas. There he listed the following ailments that he treated specifically with valerian: “chest, abdominal, and headaches, stomach upsets, chronic respiratory conditions, nervous dizziness, and sleep disorders.”

The calming effect of valerian root is mainly attributed to the sesquiterpenes and valeric acid it contains. Sesquiterpenes support the function of GABA receptors within nerve cells. In the body, they promote relaxation and have an antispasmodic effect.

Guter Schlaf!

The healing plant of the Mayas and Aztecs Passionflower has fascinated people for centuries – not only for its beauty but also for its healing potential. Excavations in North America revealed passionflower seeds stored thousands of years ago, proving its early use. The Mayas and Aztecs especially valued Passiflora incarnata for its calming and nerve-strengthening properties. The first written record of its applications dates back to 1552, when the indigenous healer Martin de la Cruz documented its uses in his Herbal Book. He described its supportive role for urinary issues and blunt injuries. Among Native American tribes, the herb was traditionally used to relieve nervousness, restlessness, pain, and cramps. From the 16th century onward, passionflower gained popularity in Europe as a natural aid for nerves, pain, and sleep problems. Its major breakthrough came in the 19th century, when doctors prescribed it widely for exhaustion-related nervousness, insomnia, and cramps. In 1938, Gerhard Madaus included it in his textbook of biological healing, highlighting the many benefits of this remarkable herb. What’s inside: Passionflower combines the power of numerous valuable compounds, such as: Flavonoids – potent antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals Polysaccharides – essential for all living organisms Amino acids – vital for metabolism and muscle development Glycoproteins – structural components of cell membranes Coumarins – traditionally associated with calming, antispasmodic, and anti-inflammatory effects Passionflower Tablets without unnecessary additives This dietary supplement contains no artificial colors, no flavorings, no preservatives, no gelatin, no added sugars, no lactose, and no gluten.
