What is barberry (Berberis vulgaris)?

Barberry is known by several names in German-speaking regions, including Sauerdorn and Essigbeere. It is a shrub that can grow up to three metres high and is traditionally associated with a long history of use and cultivation in Europe. The name Berberitze is often linked to the historical term Berber.

Some hikers and many wild animals have mixed feelings about this deciduous shrub, as contact with its thorns can be unpleasant. Visually, however, barberry has a distinctive appearance. Its yellow-brown to grey bark looks rather plain at first glance, but beneath it lies a bright yellow layer. The fragrant flowers, also bright yellow, are reminiscent of buttercups. Over the seasons, scarlet edible fruits develop. Because of their distinctly sour taste, the common names Essigbeere and Sauerdorn became established. In terms of habitat, barberry prefers dry to moderately moist soils that are also calcareous. Since Berberis vulgaris can grow in light as well as partial shade, it is often found at forest edges and in light floodplain areas.

For our products, we use ground roots from selected cultivation. Barberry root contains characteristic plant constituents such as alkaloids, including berberine.

Barberry in traditional botanical literature

Berberis vulgaris was described in botanical and herbal literature as early as antiquity. It was also mentioned in medieval herbals and traditional sources. These references are provided solely for botanical and cultural-historical context and are not intended as a description of medical use.

The special role of barberry in botanical literature is linked, among other things, to its characteristic plant constituents. Berberine, a naturally occurring constituent, is frequently mentioned in specialist literature. Barberry is also known from publications by Stephen Harrod Buhner.
