What is Barberry (Berberis vulgaris)?

Barberry is known by various names in our regions, including sour thorn and vinegar berry. It is a shrub originally from North Africa, and its name is derived from the Berber population native to that region. After being introduced to Europe, the plant was given the name Barberry.

Barberry is met with mixed feelings by hikers and many wild animals. Its thorns are unpleasant to encounter, but its appearance is quite appealing. The bark of the shrub is initially yellow-brown to gray, but underneath lies a bright yellow layer. The fragrant flowers are also bright yellow, similar to buttercups, and over the seasons develop into scarlet-red, edible berries. Due to their high vitamin C content, these fruits are extremely sour, which led to their popular names "vinegar berry" and "sour thorn."

When it comes to location, barberry is somewhat selective. It thrives best in dry to moderately moist, calcareous soils and can grow in full sun or partial shade. It is commonly found at forest edges and in open floodplain forests.

Widely Used Remedy in Antiquity and the Middle Ages

Even in ancient times, Berberis vulgaris was a staple in the repertoire of medicinal plants used by physicians. It was primarily recommended for treating liver, gallbladder, and kidney issues. In the Middle Ages, it was also found to be effective for relieving stomach and intestinal discomfort.

The wide range of applications for barberry is primarily attributed to the plant’s high concentration of alkaloids. In particular, its high content of berberine appears to play an important role. Stephen Harrod Buhner, the world’s leading expert on applied herbal medicine, describes this alkaloid as useful in the fight against resistant microorganisms, as it prevents them from attaching to the intestinal lining. According to him, barberry is also considered highly beneficial for troublesome skin conditions.
