What is Barberry (Berberis vulgaris)?

Barberry, also known as sour thorn or vinegar berry, is a shrub that can grow up to three meters high and was originally native to North Africa. The name "Barberry" is derived from the Berber people who lived in the region and was adopted by the Romans after the plant was introduced into Europe.

Although the shrub’s thorns can seem intimidating, its appearance is quite appealing. The yellow-brown to gray bark conceals a bright, sunny yellow inner layer, and the fragrant yellow blossoms resemble buttercups. As the seasons progress, they develop into scarlet-red, edible fruits that are extremely sour due to their high vitamin C content.

Barberry prefers dry to moderately moist, calcareous soils and thrives in both full sunlight and partial shade. It is commonly found at the edges of forests and in light floodplain forests.

A Widely Used Remedy in Antiquity and the Middle Ages

Barberry, also known as Berberis vulgaris, has been used since antiquity by healers and physicians. It was primarily recommended for liver, gallbladder, and kidney issues. In the Middle Ages, it was also found effective for treating stomach and intestinal problems.

The broad range of applications is mainly due to the plant’s rich variety of alkaloids, especially its high content of berberine. This alkaloid plays a key role in combating resistant microorganisms by preventing them from adhering to the intestinal lining. Stephen Harrod Buhner, an expert in applied herbal medicine, considers berberine to be a useful compound against such microbes. According to him, barberry is also beneficial for addressing various skin issues.

Also contains traces of acetic acid from organic apple cider vinegar (under 1%) and purified water.

Recommended Intake

The recommended long-term daily dose is approx. 14 milliliters, ideally divided into two doses.

Start with a total of approx. 6 milliliters per day and gradually increase over several days to the full daily dose.

Use the provided measuring cup to ensure accurate dosage.

The tincture is naturally cloudy and must be shaken before use.
