Bitter Melon Tincture (1 : 4)
Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia) tincture made from leaves and fruits
What is Bitter Melon?
In Europe, bitter melon is still considered an insider tip. In its native countries, China and India, however, this medicinal plant has long been a staple in the repertoire of experienced doctors and therapists.
The herbaceous climbing plant not only impresses with its remarkable active ingredients but also with its striking appearance. Along its shoots, which can grow up to five meters long, the bitter melon develops bright yellow, vanilla-scented flowers. Over the summer, cucumber-like fruits with wart-like skin form from the female blossoms. When ripe, the fruits burst open, revealing their red pulp.
Also known as bitter gourd, balsam pear, or bitter cucumber, this plant does not grow just anywhere. It requires specific environmental conditions and thrives best in warm, humid, and sunny locations. Only in nutrient- and humus-rich soils can the bitter gourd reach its full potential.
In accordance with traditional use, we use only leaves and fruits of the bitter melon for our tincture. The processed plant parts come exclusively from ecologically valuable cultivation. They are carefully chopped, gently dried, and finely ground. Only when all processing steps meet our strict quality criteria is the raw material gently transformed into tincture.
The Insider Tip from the Far East
Bitter melon has been used successfully for a long time in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Indian Ayurveda. In its countries of origin, the vegetable is considered extraordinarily healthy. However, its bitter taste can be a bit too intense for Western palates, which is why tinctures offer a more palatable alternative for us. This allows us to benefit from the plant's valuable ingredients—without the bitterness.
In traditional Chinese folk medicine, bitter substances in the plant are used for stomach and gallbladder issues, as well as in cases of acute worm infestation, hemorrhoids, and cramps. In Ayurveda, bitter gourd is mainly used to support blood sugar balance. Experienced Indian therapists recommend the plant especially for diabetes due to the presence of charantin, a secondary plant compound with structural similarities to human insulin.
