What is Chinese Caterpillar Fungus (Cordyceps militaris)?

This traditional tonic is a fungus known as Chinese caterpillar fungus. With a bit of imagination, its fruiting body—up to 13 cm long—really does resemble a caterpillar. Its brownish coloring and asymmetric ridges make it seem rather unremarkable at first glance. Found in open grasslands at altitudes of 3000 to 5000 meters, this humble mushroom may not get the attention it truly deserves.

A Precious Fungus – Newly Discovered

Until 1994, Cordyceps militaris was virtually unknown in Western countries. It only gained attention when a Chinese athletics coach credited it for his team’s success at the Asian Games in Hiroshima.

Cordyceps militaris has a long history, especially in Tibetan herbal medicine, where it is used as a tonic to enhance strength and performance. It is also highly valued in Indian and Chinese folk medicine. In India, it is considered a plant of longevity and is used to support the body during various conditions, including respiratory problems, abnormal cell growth, and for blood sugar balance.

Traditional Chinese Medicine considers Cordyceps militaris one of the most important tonics with warming properties. It is recommended to older people for strength and vitality and is used for imbalances in the respiratory system, such as coughing, breathing difficulties, and sensitivity to cold.
