What is Chinese Caterpillar Fungus (Cordyceps militaris)?

As the name suggests, this traditional tonic is a type of fungus. With a little imagination, the fruiting body—which can grow up to 13 cm—does indeed resemble a caterpillar. Apart from that, the Chinese caterpillar fungus appears rather unremarkable at first glance with its brownish color and one-sided folds. While wandering through the open grasslands at altitudes of 3000–5000 meters, most people wouldn’t notice this modest organism—yet it deserves far more attention than it gets.

We exclusively use the underground fungal network (mycelium) in our products. As we place great value on purity and sustainability, we source the Cordyceps fungus only from ecologically sound cultivation.

A Valuable Fungus – Newly Rediscovered

Until 1994, Cordyceps militaris was virtually unknown in the Western world. It only gained widespread attention when a Chinese athletics coach credited it for his team's success at the Asian Games in Hiroshima.

Yet this fungus has a long-standing tradition. In Tibetan herbal medicine, Cordyceps militaris is primarily used as a tonic. Local populations use the Chinese caterpillar fungus to boost energy and endurance.

Thanks to its many properties, Cordyceps militaris is highly valued by healers in Indian and Chinese folk medicine alike. In India, it is considered a plant of longevity and is prescribed as a strengthening agent for a wide range of ailments. It is commonly used to help regulate the sleep-wake cycle, address respiratory issues, support healthy cell function, and maintain blood sugar balance.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Cordyceps militaris is said to have warming properties. It is regarded as one of the three most important revitalizing remedies and is often recommended as a tonic for older adults. However, younger and youthful individuals also benefit from its wide range of applications. According to TCM, Cordyceps militaris nourishes the lungs, kidneys, and Qi—our life energy. This Qi must flow freely throughout the body to keep body, mind, and spirit in harmony. Only then can true health be maintained. Skilled doctors and practitioners prescribe Cordyceps primarily for imbalances in the respiratory system, where its soothing effects are especially appreciated in cases of coughing, chronic shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing. It is also used to help with sensitivity to cold and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

The components of this "miracle mushroom" are now well studied. Cordyceps militaris contains a wide variety of:

Cordyceps Tablets – Recommended Use

The maximum daily dose is 5 (five) tablets per day with sufficient fluid, spread throughout the day.

Start with no more than 2 tablets per day and gradually increase over several days to reach the full daily dose. If you experience any discomfort, stick with the lower amount that feels right for you.
