What is Cryptolepis (Cryptolepis sanguinolenta)?

Cryptolepis sanguinolenta is still considered an insider tip in the Western world. This tropical plant originates from Africa and is mainly found in countries such as Angola, Lagos, the Belgian Congo, and Gambia. Cryptolepis thrives particularly well in hot climates and is commonly found in savannas and dry forests.

With its glossy green leaves and delicately curved white flowers, this climbing plant appears majestic. It owes its name to a special characteristic: when the stem is cut, bright red sap emerges. This gave the African medicinal plant the name "sanguinolenta," meaning "bleeding."
