What is Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)?

Motherwort enchants not only with its melodious name but also with its striking appearance. Along its square, hairy stems grow heart-shaped leaves with a fine fuzz on the underside. Numerous purple, fluffy blossoms are a feast for the eyes. This medicinal herb is native from Europe to Iran and prefers nitrogen-rich soils near walls and fences.

Under ideal conditions, Leonurus cardiaca can grow up to 120 centimeters tall.

Herbal medicine played a major role in those days, and motherwort was considered one of the most important healing herbs. It was first mentioned in a medical book ("Gart der Gesundheit") in 1485. Renowned physicians such as Paracelsus and Rembert Dodoens prescribed motherwort for various ailments. Paracelsus used it to treat palpitations and cramps in his patients’ limbs. Rembert Dodoens recommended it for melancholy and to strengthen the heart. The population also used motherwort for anxiety and insomnia.

Today, we know that motherwort contains a variety of valuable active ingredients, including:

• Choline
• Essential oils

These components make motherwort a true all-rounder, particularly because of its protective effects on the mitochondria – the energy centers in every cell that power our organs, muscles, and joints. Additionally contains two standard and harmless cellulose-based excipients: MCC / HPMC for tablet stability, both of plant origin, and a very small amount (only a few thousandths by weight) of the commonly used and harmless substance magnesium stearate.

Recommended Use of Motherwort Tablets (Leonurus cardiaca)

The maximum daily dose is 5 (five) tablets per day, taken with sufficient liquid, spread throughout the day.

Begin with no more than 3 tablets per day, then increase gradually over several days to the maximum daily dose. If you experience any discomfort, reduce the dosage to the amount that feels comfortable for you.
