Horsetail Alcohol-Free Tincture (1:4)
What is Horsetail (Equisetum arvense)?
Horsetail is a wild medicinal plant found throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Although it may seem inconspicuous at first glance, it possesses remarkable properties. As one of the few plants surviving from the Ice Age, it owes its existence to resilience and endurance. In ancient times, horsetail played an important role not only as a medicinal herb but also for cleaning pewter utensils — hence the German nickname “Zinnkraut” (tin herb).
For our products, we use only ground herb from wild harvesting, placing great emphasis on the highest quality and purity.
Horsetail in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Horsetail has been successfully used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 2,000 years and is highly regarded by experienced therapists in Asia for its versatility. According to TCM principles, all plants and foods are classified based on their specific properties. In this context, horsetail is considered bitter and cold. Its ability to expel internal heat is particularly valued in Asia. This heat is believed to arise when the body tries to rebalance internal imbalances.
In TCM, it is believed that horsetail helps the body ward off unwanted intruders by preventing them from entering cells or gently escorting them out if already present. In this way, the body can restore its inner balance.
In the Western world, numerous studies are currently underway on the effects of horsetail, especially focusing on its unique composition. The roots of horsetail contain a wide variety of resins, tannins, essential oils, and flavonoids. Notably, it has a high content of melatonin. Previously, it was believed that melatonin only existed in humans and animals, but it is now known that many plants also contain it — horsetail being one with particularly high levels. This is of interest because melatonin plays a key role in regulating sleep and biological rhythms and has antioxidant properties that help repair and protect other molecules in the body. Excess melatonin is converted into serotonin, the "happiness hormone" that enhances well-being.
Horsetail is also known to many from the book “Herbal Antivirals” by Stephen Harrod Buhner.
Sebastian Kneipp swore by horsetail
After its significance in antiquity, this ancient medicinal plant was largely forgotten — until Sebastian Kneipp rediscovered his passion for it. The famous herbalist praised its “versatile and excellent effects” for “internal and external ailments.” Kneipp was so impressed by its many uses that he recommended it not only as a pain-relieving herb but also to strengthen body tissue. He especially valued horsetail for issues related to excretory organs.
Horsetail contains numerous important compounds, including:
- Flavonoids: Highly effective antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals.
- Potassium: An essential mineral for transmitting signals between body cells.
- Silicic acid: Important for skin, hair, nails, and connective tissue.
- Germanium: A forgotten trace element crucial for detoxification. No other plant is known to contain it in such high concentrations.

Top Produkt – klare Empfehlung!
