What is St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)?
St. John’s Wort is native to Europe and western Asia. The perennial shrub grows up to 90 cm tall and prefers roadsides, embankments, and light forests. When viewed closely, the leaves appear perforated – these are the tiny secretory glands where essential oils and resins are stored.
The plant’s true highlight, however, lies in its countless yellow blossoms, which turn a deep red when rubbed.
St. John’s Wort has enjoyed special recognition since the Middle Ages. Back then, it was seen as the very embodiment of the sun. People believed that the herb stored the sun’s energy and could dispel any darkness. Perhaps this is why in folklore it is also often referred to as “witch’s herb.”
For our products, we use only ground herb from wild harvest, always ensuring the highest standards of quality and purity.
The Power of the Sun
In the Middle Ages, Hypericum was revered not only for its appearance but especially for its healing effects. Konrad von Megenburg, who studied the treasures of nature, dedicated an entire chapter to St. John’s Wort in one of his works. He listed its main uses at the time: “St. John’s Wort strengthens the heart and liver, cleanses the kidneys, heals ulcers, and draws out poisons (from the body).” In folk medicine, it was also used to support the lungs and gallbladder. The famous physician Paracelsus was likewise a great admirer of St. John’s Wort and attributed four different virtues to the herb:
- Phantasmata – addressing mental states associated with “wild spirits and fantasies.”
- Worm virtue – in folk tradition, St. John’s Wort was considered particularly effective against worms.
- Wound virtue – it was used extensively for wounds. Paracelsus even claimed: “No herb is to be found in all the lands that equals it in healing wounds, bruises, dislocations, and chronic damage.”
- Balsamic virtue – Pastor Künzle emphasized its pain-relieving effects and recommended: “Taken internally, it heals colic, quickly heals all stab and cut wounds, and should be present in every household.”
