Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata, "King of Bitters") tincture – made from the ground herb
What is Kalmegh?
Kalmegh, also known as Andrographis paniculata, is often referred to as the "King of Bitters." This upright-growing plant with countless leaves and small white flowers may appear to some as a modest weed. However, in its native regions of South and Southeast Asia, it is highly valued. Kalmegh prefers warm and humid climates and would not thrive naturally in our regions without care.
Following the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, we use only the aerial parts of the plant in our products, as these are believed to hold the greatest potential.
To meet our high purity standards, we select only plants that comply with our strict quality criteria.
Kalmegh in Ayurveda and TCM
Kalmegh is a remarkable plant containing a wide range of beneficial compounds such as diterpenes, xanthones, and norcardioides. These unique substances explain why Kalmegh is so highly regarded in countries such as India, Indonesia, China, and across Asia.
In Ayurveda, Kalmegh has been used successfully for over 2000 years and is even mentioned in the oldest texts. It is especially valued for persistent coughs, colds, chronic fatigue, and digestive complaints.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Andrographis paniculata also plays an important role in supporting the body’s natural defenses. It is primarily used to strengthen the lung meridians and to clear excess heat from the body. Experienced TCM practitioners also use Kalmegh for the treatment of various skin conditions.
Kalmegh is also familiar to many through Stephen Harrod Buhner’s books on Lyme disease.
