Kalmegh Tincture (1:4)
Kalmegh Tincture (Andrographis paniculata, "King of Bitters") – made from the ground herb
What is Kalmegh?
Kalmegh, known as the "King of Bitters," is botanically classified as Andrographis paniculata. This upright-growing plant, with its countless leaves and small white flowers, may appear rather modest at first sight. To many in the West, the bushy herb resembles a weed. However, in its native regions of South and Southeast Asia, it is highly valued. The "King of Bitters" thrives in warm, humid climates and would not feel at home in our latitudes.
Inspired by the traditions of TCM and Ayurveda, we use only the aerial parts of the plant for our products. According to Eastern medicine, the leaves, flowers, and stems contain the greatest potential.
In keeping with our strict purity standards, we select only plants that meet our high-quality criteria.
Kalmegh in Ayurveda and TCM
Kalmegh contains an impressive range of active compounds such as diterpenes, xanthones, and norcardioides. These unique chemical substances explain why the "King of Bitters" is so highly respected in India, Indonesia, China, and many other Asian countries.
In Ayurveda, Kalmegh has been used successfully for over 2000 years and is even mentioned in some of the oldest texts. Ayurvedic practitioners traditionally use Kalmegh for persistent coughs, colds, chronic fatigue, and digestive complaints.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Andrographis paniculata also plays an important role in strengthening the body’s defenses. It is primarily used to support the lung meridians and to reduce internal heat. TCM doctors and practitioners also apply Kalmegh in the treatment of various skin conditions.
Andrographis paniculata is also familiar to many through the works of Stephen Harrod Buhner on Lyme disease.
