What is Maca (Lepidium meyenii / Lepidium peruvianum)?

In recent years, Maca has also gained attention in Europe. But what exactly is behind this name? It is the root of a cress plant originally native to Peru. This medicinal plant thrives best at altitudes of up to 4000 meters in the Andes. Under these extreme conditions – strong winds, cold, and intense UV radiation – Maca develops its full potential. At only about 20 cm in height, the plant grows close to the ground, and its true treasure lies in its root. The stem gradually transforms into a tuber, where the plant stores not only water but also a wealth of nutrients. At first glance, the Maca root looks much like a turnip.

From the tuber sprout feathery leaves, which are used by the local Peruvian population as food, often eaten as a salad.

Even the Inca appreciated its powerful effects when they built the legendary city of “Machu Picchu” in the 15th century. Also contains 2 common and safe cellulose excipients with the abbreviations MCC / HPMC, used for tablet stability (plant-based), and a very small amount (just a few thousandths by weight) of the common, harmless substance magnesium stearate.
