What is the heart-shaped Houttuynia (Houttuynia cordata)?

Houttuynia cordata is a perennial climbing plant whose stems creep along the ground before rising into upright stalks about 35 centimeters tall. It owes its name to the heart-shaped leaves that grow along the stems, as well as to the white-greenish flowers that stand upright on flower stalks.

Originally native to Nepal, India, China, Indochina, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Java, Houttuynia cordata has now established itself as an invasive plant in other parts of the world. This spread is mainly due to the remarkable adaptability of the plant, which thrives at elevations from sea level up to 2500 meters. However, it prefers cool, shady locations with moist, loamy soil, which is why it is often found along streams and in forests.

Houttuynia cordata has a long tradition and is valued by indigenous communities as an effective remedy against diarrhea and infectious diseases. In Japan, the plant is highly esteemed, particularly as a detoxifying agent, which is reflected in its local name "dokudami," meaning "poison-blocking."

Houttuynia cordata is also recommended in traditional Chinese medicine. The herb is classified there as "cold and pungent" and is mainly used to expel heat from the body caused by an excess of Yang. This heat can block vital meridians such as the lungs and bladder, leading to inflammation in the respiratory tract, sinuses, joints, and excretory organs. By using Houttuynia cordata, Yin and Yang are brought back into balance and the body’s fluids can flow freely again.
