What is the heart-shaped Houttuynia (Houttuynia cordata)?

Houttuynia cordata is a perennial climbing plant whose stems grow along the ground and produce upright stalks about 35 centimeters tall. It owes its name to the heart-shaped leaves that grow along the stems and the whitish-green flowers with upright flower stalks.

Originally native to Nepal, India, China, Indochina, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Java, Houttuynia cordata has spread to other parts of the world as an invasive plant due to its adaptability. It thrives both at sea level and at elevations of up to 2500 meters above sea level. The plant prefers cool and shady locations with moist, loamy soil, which is why it often grows along streams and in forests.

The heart-shaped Houttuynia in traditional use

Houttuynia cordata has a long tradition and is valued by indigenous populations as an effective remedy against diarrhea and infectious diseases. In Japan, the plant is highly regarded and considered an important detoxifying agent, as reflected in its local name "dokudami," which translates as "poison-blocking."

Houttuynia cordata is also recommended in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, the herb is classified as cold and pungent and is mainly used to expel heat from the body. According to Chinese medicine, this heat arises from an excess of Yang, which can block important meridians such as the lungs and bladder and cause inflammation in various parts of the body. By using Houttuynia cordata, the balance of Yin and Yang is restored and the free flow of body fluids is supported.

Heart-shaped Houttuynia Tincture Recommended Use

The long-term intended daily dose is approx. 6 milliliters per day, ideally divided into two intakes.

Start first with a total of approx. 3 milliliters per day and then gradually increase over several days until reaching the long-term daily dose.

Use the supplied measuring cup to measure the recommended amount.

Dietary supplements are generally not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. Store protected from heat, dry, and always out of reach of children. The recommended daily intake stated here should generally not be exceeded. 

The tincture is naturally cloudy and must be shaken before use.

Important: This product is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. In general, intake is not recommended for longer than 3 consecutive months; afterwards, a one-month break before continued use is advisable.
