What is heartleaf houttuynia (Houttuynia cordata)?
Houttuynia cordata is a perennial plant whose stem grows along the ground. Upright stems of around 35 centimetres grow from it. Houttuynia gets its name from the heart-shaped leaves found on these stems. The plant also forms greenish-white flowers with an upright flower stalk.
Houttuynia cordata is originally found in Nepal, India, China and Indochina, across Japan and Vietnam and as far as Thailand and Java. Today, the plant is also established in other parts of the world as an invasive species. This is mainly due to the strong adaptability of heartleaf houttuynia. It grows from sea level up to altitudes of around 2500 metres above sea level. However, the plant prefers cool, shady locations with moist, loamy soil. For this reason, Houttuynia cordata often grows near streams and woodland areas.
In German-speaking countries, Houttuynia cordata is also known by names such as Fischkraut, Molchschwanz or chameleon plant. These names refer to the plant itself and its distinctive botanical characteristics.

Heartleaf houttuynia in traditional use
Houttuynia cordata has a long tradition. In Japan in particular, the plant has an established place in herbal knowledge. There, heartleaf houttuynia is also known as dokudami. This traditional name is part of the plant's cultural history of use.
Houttuynia cordata has also long been described in TCM. In traditional Chinese herbal classification, the herb is considered cold and pungent. This classification comes from the traditional TCM system and describes the way the plant is viewed in that context. This description is intended only to explain the traditional terminology.

The formula is based on Houttuynia cordata, ethanol, water and traces of acetic acid from organic apple cider vinegar. The tincture is made from dried herb and is intended to supplement the daily diet.
The liquid form makes it easy to divide the recommended daily intake into several portions throughout the day using the pipette.

Houttuynia cordata tincture recommended intake
The recommended daily intake is 132 drops (approx. 4 millilitres) per day, preferably divided into four intakes of about 33 drops each. Start with a total of only 64 drops (approx. 2 millilitres) per day - or four times 16 drops - and then increase over several days up to the recommended daily intake. If you do not tolerate the intake well, stay with a lower amount that is well tolerated by you and do not exceed the recommended daily intake.
