What is Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)?
If you’ve ever seen a true passionflower in the tropical rainforests, its breathtaking beauty is impossible to forget. Along stems up to 5 meters long, the plant produces incredible blossoms that are not only unique but also captivating. Passionflowers appear in shades of white, red, or violet, but all share a striking symmetry.
For our tincture, we use the whole herb – naturally in the familiar Phoenix der Lebenskraft quality, meaning certified organic cultivation and absolute purity.
The healing plant of the Mayas and Aztecs
Passionflower has fascinated people since long before modern times. Archaeological sites in North America revealed seeds stored thousands of years ago, showing that the plant was already valued by ancient civilizations. The Mayas and Aztecs especially appreciated Passiflora incarnata for its calming and strengthening effects on the nerves.
The first written records of its uses date back to 1552, when the indigenous healer Martin de la Cruz compiled the Aztecs’ applications in his famous Herbal Book. He described its supportive role in easing urinary problems and treating blunt injuries. Among Native Americans, the herb was traditionally used for nervousness, restlessness, pain, and cramps.
From the 16th century onward, passionflower became increasingly recognized in Europe as a natural aid for nerves, pain, and sleep disorders. Its breakthrough came in the 19th century, when physicians prescribed it extensively for exhaustion-related nervousness, insomnia, and cramps. By 1938, Gerhard Madaus included it in his textbook of biological healing, confirming its status as one of the most important medicinal herbs.
