Sarsaparilla (Smilax glabra) tablets made from the roots

What is Sarsaparilla (Smilax glabra)?

Sarsaparilla is originally native to the Americas and southern China. This climbing plant from the Smilax family can grow up to 50 meters in length. With its small flowers and red-to-black berries, it offers a fascinating appearance. However, its true value, as so often in life, lies hidden from the human eye. Sarsaparilla contains a wide range of important compounds that already attracted attention in medieval folk medicine.

For the production of our tablets, we use finely ground roots according to traditional folk medicine practices. These are carefully milled and gently pressed into tablets, allowing you to benefit from all the valuable constituents of the plant.

The secret knowledge of medieval folk medicine

Although Sarsaparilla is native to the Americas, this medicinal plant found its way into European folk medicine during the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, Smilax glabra was considered a particularly valuable tonic used to promote overall vitality. Its invigorating effect was so highly valued at the time that medieval physicians praised it as an outstanding blood purifier.

In its native regions, however, the climbing plant had been in use for much longer. Indigenous peoples of the Americas traditionally used Sarsaparilla to support the stomach, kidneys, urinary tract, skin, and respiratory system.

Sarsaparilla contains valuable compounds such as phytosterols (stigmasterol, sitosterol), resins, saponins, steroidal saponins (parillin, sarsaparin), and starch.

Senega root (Polygala tenuifolia) - alcohol-free tincture

Senega Root Alcohol-Free Tincture (1:4) Senega Root (Polygala tenuifolia) tincture – made from the roots What is Senega Root (Polygala tenuifolia)? The so-called rattlesnake root plant is highly valued by Native Americans, especially for its medicinal roots. It thrives in forests, prairies, and along moist riverbanks, provided the soil is rocky and calcareous. Despite stems reaching up to 50 cm, the flowering plant looks rather inconspicuous at first glance, with its small green to white blossoms. Yet its true strength lies hidden in the woody rootstock, which grows in a twisted, conical form and gives off a wintergreen-like aroma. Just like Native Americans, we use exclusively the roots of Senega root for the production of our tablets. These are finely ground and gently pressed into tablets. Senega Root in Traditional Chinese Medicine Senega root has been used successfully in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 2000 years, valued by practitioners in Asia for its versatility. In TCM, plants and foods are classified according to their properties; Senega root is regarded as bitter and cold. It is appreciated for its ability to dispel internal “heat” that arises when the body attempts to rid itself of imbalances. TCM describes Senega root as a kind of doorman or soldier, protecting the body from invaders by preventing them from entering the cells or politely escorting them out if they do. In this way, the body is able to balance its inner fire. In the Western world, numerous studies have explored the properties of Senega root, especially its unique composition of resins, tannins, essential oils, and flavonoids. Particularly noteworthy is its high content of melatonin—a hormone once thought to exist only in humans and animals but now known to be present in many plants. Senega root is among the richest plant sources of melatonin. This is of special interest because melatonin is essential for healthy sleep cycles and circadian rhythms, while also acting as a powerful antioxidant that protects and repairs molecules in the body. Any melatonin not required is converted into serotonin, the so-called “happiness hormone,” which helps enhance mood and wellbeing. Senega root is also known from Stephen Harrod Buhner’s book Herbal Antivirals. The North American Secret To be clear: Senega root has never truly been a secret, as it was already used in Europe in the 18th century. However, traditional knowledge often fades over time. Still, Senega root is a remarkably versatile plant. Native Americans continue to use the roots today for sore throat, coughs, colds, hoarseness, toothaches, and wounds. In the 18th century, the roots were also used in German-speaking regions to address eye problems and bladder complaints. Senega root contains valuable compounds such as saponins (e.g., senegin), sorbitol derivatives, wintergreen oil, phenolic acids, and sterols.
