What is Stephania?

Stephania tetrandra is an evergreen climbing plant native to Taiwan and southern China, typically growing along village paths and roadsides. Under favorable conditions, it can reach a considerable height of about 3 meters, spiraling around its stems. Unlike many other plants of this type, Stephania tetrandra does not bear flowers, though its green leaves somewhat resemble ivy.

Stephania tetrandra is considered one of the most treasured medicinal plants in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is prescribed by experienced practitioners under the name Han Fang Ji. Like many foods and remedies in Chinese medicine, Stephania tetrandra is attributed with specific properties. It is classified as bitter and cooling and is primarily used for protecting nerve and blood vessel walls, for addressing inflammation, internal heat, and regulating the body’s red fluids.

The roots of Stephania tetrandra are rich in flavonoids, alkaloids, and tetrandrine, though not all of its constituents have been fully identified. Flavonoids are known to provide protective benefits for the human body, while tetrandrine is recognized for its muscle-relaxing effects.

The plant may also be familiar from the works of Stephen Harrod Buhner, who regards Stephania tetrandra as a supportive remedy for Lyme disease.
