Devil’s Claw Powder
Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) powder made from the roots
What is Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens)?
Admittedly, the name “Devil’s Claw” may not sound very reassuring at first, as the word “devil” is often associated with something negative. However, it’s important to know that the name simply refers to the fruit of the plant, which develops from the reddish-violet flowers. These fruits form gnarled protrusions that spread out like claws once they ripen.
Devil’s Claw is a plant native exclusively to the African continent, thriving mainly in sandy steppe regions such as the savannas and the Kalahari Desert. It survives even extremely dry seasons by cutting off water supply to its above-ground parts, which then gradually die back. What remains is its root system, anchored deep in the ground. This root consists of a thick primary root and numerous secondary roots that act as reservoirs for water and nutrients and are therefore called “storage roots.” Considering that the plant sacrifices its above-ground parts to protect the roots, it becomes clear how precious this plant truly is.
Because health and the environment are equally important to us, we place great emphasis on sustainability and process only storage roots that meet our strict quality standards.
The treasure of African folk medicine
In African folk medicine, Devil’s Claw holds a long-standing reputation among doctors, healers, and local communities. Traditionally, this medicinal plant has been used primarily for digestive and joint complaints. African doctors and traditional shamans believe that Devil’s Claw supports digestion by strengthening the function of organs such as the gallbladder, liver, stomach, and intestines, as well as excretory organs like the bladder and kidneys. In its native regions, it is also often used for painful joint discomfort.
What’s inside:
The storage roots are a true treasure chest of valuable compounds, including:
- Bitter substances (support digestion)
- Iridoids (believed to be immunomodulating, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral)
- Flavonoids (powerful antioxidants that help protect the body from free radicals)

Klare Empfehlung!
