Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) tincture – made from the roots
What is Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens)?
The name “Devil’s Claw” may not sound particularly reassuring at first. But rest assured, the name only refers to the fruits of the plant, which develop from its reddish-violet flowers. These fruits are covered with gnarled, claw-like outgrowths that open once the fruit is ripe.
Devil’s Claw is found exclusively in Africa, thriving mainly in sandy steppe regions such as the savannas and the Kalahari Desert. It survives even extreme droughts by withdrawing water from its above-ground parts, which then wither away. Instead, it focuses its energy on its deep-reaching root system: a thick primary root with numerous secondary roots known as storage roots. These serve as a valuable reservoir of water and nutrients for the plant.
We are committed to both human health and environmental protection. That is why we place great emphasis on sustainability and use only storage roots that meet our strict quality standards.
A treasure in African folk medicine
In African folk medicine, Devil’s Claw has long held an important place and is highly valued by doctors, healers, and local communities. Traditionally, this medicinal plant is primarily used to support digestive health and relieve joint discomfort. African doctors and traditional healers believe that Devil’s Claw stimulates digestion by supporting the functions of organs such as the gallbladder, liver, stomach, and intestines, as well as excretory organs such as the bladder and kidneys. In its native regions, it is also frequently used for painful joint complaints.
What’s inside:
The storage roots are a treasure chest of valuable compounds, including:
- Bitter substances (support digestion)
- Iridoids (considered immunomodulating, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral)
- Flavonoids (powerful antioxidants that help protect the body from free radicals)
