Devil’s Claw Tincture (1 : 4)
What is Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens)?
Admittedly, the name “Devil’s Claw” may not sound very reassuring at first, since the word “devil” is often associated with something negative. However, you can rest assured that the name comes only from the plant’s fruits, which develop from its reddish-violet flowers. These fruits have gnarled outgrowths that spread like claws once they are ripe.
This medicinal plant, with its nearly unpronounceable Latin name, is found exclusively on the African continent. Devil’s Claw thrives in sandy steppe regions, mainly in the savannas and the Kalahari Desert. There, it withstands even extreme droughts by withdrawing water from its above-ground parts, which gradually wither and die. What remains is the deep-anchored root system, consisting of a thick primary root and numerous lateral roots. These function as water and nutrient storage organs and are therefore called storage roots. When you consider that the plant sacrifices all of its above-ground parts to protect its roots, it becomes clear just how valuable Devil’s Claw truly is.
We care equally about human health and the environment. That is why sustainability is so important to us, and we process only storage roots that meet our strict quality standards.
A treasure in African folk medicine
Devil’s Claw is an essential part of African folk medicine, where it is highly valued by doctors, healers, and local communities. Traditionally, it is used especially for digestive and joint complaints. African doctors and traditional healers believe that Devil’s Claw stimulates digestion by supporting the functions of digestive organs (gallbladder, liver, stomach, intestines) as well as excretory organs (bladder and kidneys). In its native regions, Devil’s Claw is also frequently used to ease painful joint discomfort.
What’s inside:
The storage roots are a rich source of beneficial compounds, including:
- Bitter substances (support digestion)
- Iridoids (considered immunomodulating, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral)
- Flavonoids (powerful antioxidants that help protect the body from free radicals)
